Titanic: The Legend Continues
The
legacy of the ill-fated ocean liner Titanic is remembered at the Titanic museum.
It houses more than 400 artifacts from the Titanic, which sank in 1912
after striking an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean. Items include deck chairs,
jewelry, dinnerware, life jackets, menus and personal letters plus more
than 100 photographs taken by passengers. There are hands-on
activities for youths, including a refrigerated iceberg they can touch.
Visitors also can try sending SOS telegrams or steer the ship around icebergs
using new computer imaging. The artifacts in Branson were taken off the ship by
passengers and crew members or were found floating in the debris field and
include a leather trunk that was found floating with a purse and a silk blouse
in it, and a watch that was recovered from someone who perished that stopped
when ship went down. Every effort has been made to be respectful to the Titanic
and the many lives were lost. The museum is located at the corner of Hwy. 76 and
165.

The College of the Ozarks
The
college was founded in 1906 as an agricultural school to give worthy students an
education, especially those without sufficient means. While maintaining its
agricultural heritage, in 1965 it expanded to a full four year college. C of O,
better know as Hard Work U, epitomizes the Christian values, hard work and
earnestness that underlie so much of the culture of southwest Missouri. Every
student works on campus providing the work force to run the entire campus
including their own fire department. A tour of the campus will take you to
many sites of historical significance including the gothic limestone
chapel built by the students in 1956 and Edwards Mill which is still
in operation, where students grind whole grain and upstairs produce beautiful
works in the weaving studio. Next door to the mill you can browse through the
greenhouses collection of 7,000 plants including the orchids grown for Shoji
Tabuchi. College of the Ozarks is also home to the Ralph Foster Museum and
the Boger Gallery and Museum. All the goods produced on campus are on sale
at the Friendship House at the entrance to the college where you can also enjoy
the great food at the restaurant.
Dogwood Canyon
You
can experience the beauty of Dogwood Canyon, a pristine 10,000 acre nature
preserve, by guided tram tours or on your own by walking or biking on the 3˝
mile asphalted track which winds along the trout stream. Cross the water on
lovely rock bridges and see the trout swimming in the stream. Stop at the Glory
Hole and see trophy-sized rainbow and brown trout. You will also see herds of
elk, Texas longhorns, American bison and white-tail deer as well as the deep
hollows and sheer limestone bluffs covered in oak, pine & cedar and displaying
numerous caves. There are any number of things you can do at Dogwood Canyon,
including walking and biking, horseback riding, tram tours, trout fishing
- with or without a guide. Lodging is available in one of their rustic log
cabins. Be sure to have lunch at the Lodge, check out the gift shop, Indian
artifacts & Civil War displays. You will go home with memories to last a
lifetime.

Imax Theater
The Ozarks Discovery IMAX Theater puts the audience in the middle of all
the action, drama and comedy. The six-story tall and 83 feet wide screen will
intrigue you and the 2,200 watt surround sound system will make you feel like
you are a part of the movie. IMAX films change throughout the season but the one
IMAX film that shows continually is "Ozarks Legends and Legacy." It is a great
introduction to the regional history and culture. The special projector and lens
system makes it possible to also show regular first run major motion pictures
every evening. The Imax theater is also a great entertainment complex for
live theatre shows in the Little Opry Theatre, the food court, shopping, and a
triplex movie theatre.
